What’s Trending in the Kitchen in 2017

The kitchen is the heart of the home. A place where families come together at the end of a long day and friends are always welcome. Just as with other rooms in our homes, kitchens also follow ever-changing interior design trends. Changes in our lifestyle and various movements in other aspects of our lives (fashion, health, etc…), in turn, drive changes within the home. Read on for our list of what’s cooking in the world of kitchen interior design so far this year.

Darker Tones

This is a trend we’re seeing throughout the home in 2017. Darker hues, such as Benjamin Moore’s Colour of the Year for 2017, ‘Shadow’, are proving really popular. People are experimenting, with great success, as they look beyond the realm of neutral colours.

Natural Stone

Greater focus on, and use of, natural materials is another popular trend within the home so far this year. In the kitchen, solid stone work-surfaces, stone veneer fronted cupboards and drawers, and natural stone flooring are increasingly fashionable. Interior designers are moving away from all-white kitchens to deliver texture, depth and character.

Wood/Timber

Timber finishes are also growing in popularity in the kitchen, with a focus on mid-toned, textured wood, as opposed to the lighter tones harnessed by the likes of IKEA in the past. Wood creates a more natural look and feel, adding warmth, texture and character when used correctly.

Greenery

Continuing with the natural theme, another trend we’re seeing more and more in the kitchen this year is the introduction of plant life. This can be anything from a miniature herb garden to large-scale hanging/green wall. The health benefits are unquestionable, with plants creating cleaner air whilst reducing stress and increasing happiness. Why not give it a go? It’s easy and affordable. A bit ofgreenery can transform the kitchen.

Healthy Cooking

Awareness around health and wellness in recent years has increased hugely. This new-found consciousness has had an impact on interior design throughout the home, including the kitchen. Increasingly health-conscious individuals are now looking to integrate healthy cooking appliances, such as steamers and pressure cookers. Miele, for example, released an integrated pressure cooker recently, which has proved very popular. Expect more and more focus around healthy eating appliances this year.

Designated ‘Zones’

Interior designers are being increasingly asked to include designated areas within kitchens, such as ‘coffee zones’. These consist of an area dedicated to integrated coffee makers plus all the added necessities for coffee lovers to make the perfect cup for themselves or their guests.

Wine is also being used as a focal feature, with some people even backlighting their selection of bottles for visual effect. Showing off your rack is on the up.

Open fronted storage

One final trend, which we touched on in a previous article, ‘How to make the most of smaller living spaces’, is that of open-fronted cupboards. This increasingly popular approach to storage in the kitchen allows people to show off their cookware. Provided your cupboards aren’t full to the brim, it can also increase the feeling of space whilst adding character. This is worth exploring in more rustic/natural kitchens whilst for modern kitchens we recommend considering the natural materials mentioned above.

5 Top Interior Design Trends of 2017

With 2017 well and truly in full swing, we look at 5 prominent interior design trends taking the year by storm. From natural tones to retro classics, rejuvenate your home with these top tips from industry experts.

Greenery:

‘Pantone’s verdant colour of the year for 2017, Greenery, seems to be an instant hit for those looking for a revitalizing, back-to-nature hue that brings zest while still managing to work with warm wood tones,’ says Mitchell Parker from Houzz. Get creative and inject new life into a space.

Why not take advantage of natural greenery by adding plant life to your bedroom or living room? As well as improving air quality, it creates a more natural, relaxed aesthetic that can increase happiness and reduce stress.

Natural Jewel Tones:

‘Last year welcomed the bold return of art deco-inspired designs, and with them come luxurious jewel tones. Indulge your regal side with rich emerald chairs, bold sapphire walls, and amethyst accents. Pair the designs with neutral, minimal wall colours for a toned-down take on the trend, or go wild and slather your entire living space in vivid colour,’ stated Jamie Wiebe in a recent article for realtor.com.

Graphic Inspired Art:

‘Graphic inspired art will provide a contemporary take on nature over the year ahead. Natural items like pebbles and blades of grass will be given a new lease of life through the playful interaction of graphics and textures,’ according to Warren Lewis from propertyreporter.co.uk. From throws to murals, modern interpretations of nature can add relaxed character to the home and increase happiness.

Textured Glass Lighting:

Housewareslive.net believes that ‘when it comes to lighting, textured glass is unquestionably the way to go. A rough, natural finish created through texture, while retaining the beauty of glass, will further contribute to the natural vibe that will be so evident’ throughout 2017.

Cork:

‘One of the latest trends to enter the new season for 2017 is the use of cork. Fashionable in the 70s, we’ve seen a quiet resurgence as designers move towards using cork in everyday interiors. It’s a functional, sustainable and practical material and interiors experts are using it in the most creative way. One of the great things about cork is its environmental benefits. As it is created from the bark of the tree it means the tree does not have to be cut down and can continue to live and grow,’ explained Roddy Clarke in a recent article for the Evening Standard. Not only is cork a fashionable material idea that adds warmth and texture to rooms, it’s also perfect for absorbing sound in larger, open plan homes. We say, embrace this retro classic!

Crossrail Effect: 5 Places to Consider When Buying Property in London

With the first stage of Crossrail due to open in just a few months’ time, we look at 5 locations where the imminent arrival of London’s new rail link has been creating strong property investment opportunities.

1. Hayes

Currently, Hayes’ only rail link comes courtesy of Great Western Railway from Hayes & Harlington station. As of 2018, however, it will welcome new rapid connections to central & east London courtesy of Crossrail, with ten trains per hour running in both directions. Furthermore, journey times to London Heathrow will be cut to just 5 minutes, an added appeal for frequent jetsetters and global business travellers. Beyond transport links, heavy investment in the regeneration of the town centre means that Hayes will increasingly offer good local retail, plazas, entertainment and office space.

2. Southall

A classic example of a zone 4 location thriving off the increased cost of living and the exodus of young professionals & families from central London. With the arrival of Crossrail will come a 17-minute journey time to Bond Street and London’s West End. Southall is also experiencing considerable regeneration, including the Southall Waterside development – a 3,750 home, canal fronted estate with new school, retail, cinema and commercial space. All the above make Southall one to watch.

3. Abbey Wood

Abbey Wood, to the east, is another location performing well due to the impending arrival of Crossrail. Investors are already snapping up affordable accommodation in the vicinity of the soon-to-be Crossrail station. Travel time to central London will fall below 1 hour, making Abbey Wood a viable consideration for professionals seeking good value accommodation coupled with a manageable commute.

4. Greenwich

Greenwich was recently remarked as being ‘a step up in the world from Soho’ by two young first-time buyers. This may just be one opinion but it does emphasise the fact that Greenwich, beyond being a great place to invest, is also beautiful place to live. Residents are spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do, such as soaking in the stunning views of London from the top of Greenwich Park. It also made the Londonist’s recent list of the ‘Top 6 Romantic London Days Out. Add Crossrail’s rapid transport links to the mix and Greenwich will surely feature very highly on the lists of young professionals, couples and young families over the next few years.

5. Ealing

Ealing currently features high on the list for first time buyers seeking affordable London property with good transport links. Crossrail, however, is set to be a real game changer. Journey times to Bond Street will be just 11 minutes, whilst the commute to The City will be just 20 minutes. In addition, Ealing continues to offer a family-friendly environment with improving retail, eateries and leisure facilities.

London Ranked Most Desirable City for Ultra-Wealthy to Buy Luxury Property in 2017

London has been named the most desirable city in the world in which to buy luxury property in a recent report published by Wealth-X, produced in conjunction with Warburg Realty and Barnes International Realty. The first edition of ‘The Global Property Handbook’ reviews global ultra-luxury property markets and considers factors currently affecting the buying habits of the world’s super-rich.

The focal point of the report is the ‘Alpha Cities Index’, a unique index ‘which ranks the overall attractiveness of a city for wealthy individuals when considering a luxury real estate purchase. The index is the first of its kind to incorporate the trifecta of demands from the wealthy – the ideal city property must satisfy a range of practical, emotional, and financial considerations’, according to the report.

In the overall rankings, London beat New York to top spot. Tokyo was positioned someway behind in third place, followed by Sydney and Paris in fourth and fifth respectively.

‘The number one ranking for London reflects its strength across the board, ranking in the top four places in more than half of the 11 indicators―cultural richness, luxury shopping, education, connectivity, financial safe-haven, ease of doing business, and the number of ultra-wealthy individuals living in the city. It also ranks in the top ten for personal safety and its green credentials. This breadth of appeal explains its attraction to a large and diverse range of wealthy property buyers, with the city well suited to meet specific buyer needs, while also delivering on many fronts as an ‘all-rounder’ with strong safe-haven appeal’, the report also explains.

Despite Brexit, London clearly remains to be seen by the world’s ultra-wealthy as both a status symbol and international playground. Only New York comes close; but with the arrival of Donald Trump as US president comes considerable uncertainty and increased isolationism from the outside world. Interestingly, however, the USA accounted for nearly half of the top 25 cities in the index. It will be interesting to see if that remains to be the case in 12-months’ time.

As one of the world’s great cities, “London is home to many of the world’s most affluent families and it continues to attract British and international buyers. Post the Brexit vote, a weaker GBP, low interest rates for the medium term, and the choice of quality luxury real estate means 2017 will be a once-in- a-generation buying opportunity. London will remain a ‘global city’ which is hard to beat for business, family, and lifestyle,” says Alex Newell, Managing Director of Hanover Private Office.
